- About Us
Please practice reading the tricky words over the half term holiday.
Across the school, all children have been studying geography for the last two weeks. We began with discussing what geography is and what a geographer studies. We then went on to look at different types of maps of our local area of Crook. Some of us were even able to find our homes using Google Earth! We were then taught what 'physical' and 'human' features are in geography and sorted some features we are familiar with into these two categories.
We were then ready to undertake some field work! We walked into Crook town center and focused on identifying as many human features as we could. We took it in turns to sketch our favourite human features, including our school which could be seen from the fire station. Once we returned to school, we researched local physical features in our area and added two sketches to our observations. It was so lovely to be able to go on a field trip again and all of the adults were very pleased at how well the children represented our school, whilst walking around the town.
Please discuss our key geographical vocabulary with the children to see if they know the meaning of each word!
Map, atlas, town, human features, physical features, locate, satellite, compass.
All of the Year 1 staff are very impressed with how well 1M and 1N have settled back into their new classes. There are lots of children who are already showing an abundance of diamond power by completing tasks independently! We have now begun our new history topic of 'toys'. We have learned the meaning of 'past' and 'present' and looked at toys which fit in both of those categories. We have been identifying features of a toy which suggests whether they are from the past or present, such as materials used and how a toy moves!
Today we played some playground games from the past and present. Pat-a-cake and skipping proved to be VERY tricky but we certainly got there in the end!
